Birdwatching

Went for a quick look out west with Iain yesterday.
Castlereagh was as poor as usual, with buff rumped thornbills being the only bird of note.
Bushells lagoon was better with some brown quails but pitt town lagoon was poor.
Scheville (probably not spelt like this) was alright with a good view of a creasted shrike tit.

Those photos look better than your usual ones, you wouldnt happen to have a fancy new Canon 40D and 70-200 would you?

No I only have the 40D at the moment.
The lens was not in stock so I will have to wait a bit for that.
Don't know if the photos were a lot better I just took 200 of them so it was easier to find some good ones.

You have learnt the first lesson of digital photography, take many photos but show only a few.
I have some good free RAW software if you want, its called Raw Shooters Essentials. It was recently bought out by Adobe and shut down but I still have a copy of it.
Are you sure the 200mm will be long enough for birding, you may need to pick up the 100-400mm or a nice 600mm f4 IS L.
By the way, you only need to use the sRGB colour space, while adobeRGB has a wider gamut it isn’t usable in 99.9% of applications (Iain mentioned that you were a little confused).

Thanks for the software offer but unless it runs on Linux it won't be much use. At the moment I'm using ufraw and rawstudio although I like ufraw better.
It seems alright but I'm pretty crap with it, might need to read the instructions.
Yes the 70-200 does lack reach, I had 300 on the weekend and that was too little. Still I would rather not get a lens that weighs more than I do. The 70-200 may also still be useful for the odd portrait etc. Unlike the 800mm lens that I see canon is about to bring out. Although I'm sure Allan will still be tempted by it. I did think about the 100-400 but don't like the push pull thing.
